Happy Birthday America!
Several years ago, we received this homemade card in the mail from our son and daughter-in-law. Both of their fathers were Air Force career men, so they remember the sacrifices that military families make.
I pray, as a nation, we never forget the men and women who have served and sacrificed for this imperfect, but still-worth-fighting-for country.
It’s true that freedom isn’t free.
Today, because of those who have served, we can:
1. Grill and burn as many hot dogs as we want.
2. Splat each other with water balloons.
3. Drink too much beer.
4. Display the American flag on our property.
5. Spend too much money on fireworks.
6. Injure ourselves with fireworks.
7. Go online to research anything we want.
8. Travel wherever we want to.
9. Obtain an education.
10. Own property.
11. Say hateful things to one another. (Or choose to be kind.)
12. Attend the church of our choice.
13. Have our day in court.
14. Pay for 350 TV channels and only watch 4.
15. Vote.
16. Argue over whom to vote for.
17. Run for public office.
18. Watch the DVD John Adams, the excellent mini-series, originally on HBO. (Check it out and learn a few things.)
19. Sing “America, The Beautiful.”
20. Remember that we are all created equal.
Because, if we don’t endeavor to live in peace with one another, America will become a country that “once was” in the history books.
We like to watch Independence Day and 1776! Have a great July 4th, Mare!
So many people forget WHY we can do all these things. And while I won't be drinking beer, I plan to be in a full on food coma by 2pm.
Yeah for the red, white, & blue & then YOU "."
Have a very great 4th!
Beautiful list and a great reminder to celebrate our independence.
Hear, hear! I couldn't agree more, Mare. I hope you and your family have a wonderful day, and enjoy doing most of those things on your list.
Yes there really are so many to thank for what we have. We really are blessed.
Following you now too 🙂
I think it is great that you are patriotic and hope you have a great 4th July but I have to disagree that America is the best country I happen to think Australia is but hell that is to be expected since I am Australian and love my country….. I think most people love their own country not sure about those who live in a 3rd world country but some of them may also love their own country…….
Found your blog through Emmy, great list by the way!!
happy 4th to you too!!!
oh yes…how true!! and how much we take for granted.
Couldn't agree more! Actually, I agree with you on so many things I'm thinking we could be friends! or long lost cousins at least.
wonderful reminder of our precious freedoms, and how they do not come easy
I love your list, and you're so right that freedom isn't free. Many thanks to the military folks in your family.
